The repair

Leather that is used will eventually need work. That is not a fault in the leather, it is the point of it. Anything made on this bench comes back to this bench.

A hand-stitched saddle seam, which can be cut out and redone without harming the leather
A saddle seam can be opened and redone. A machine seam cannot.

Any piece we made, we repair. For as long as the dog is wearing it.

This is only possible because of how the pieces are built. A saddle stitch is two needles and one thread through awl-pricked holes, so a seam can be opened, cleaned and restitched through the same holes without weakening the strap. A machine lockstitch punches the leather and locks thread against thread. Cut it once and the seam unzips, and the holes are already ruined. We can rebuild the first kind indefinitely. Nobody can rebuild the second.

Between services

Bridle leather is already stuffed with tallow and wax, so it wants very little. Wipe the grain with a barely damp cloth when it is dirty and let it dry away from heat. Do not use saddle soap more than once or twice a year, and never use anything with silicone in it. Brass dulls on purpose. If you want it bright, a dry cloth brings it back in about ten seconds. If you prefer the patina, do nothing at all, which is what most people end up doing.
